You’re standing by the fence after practice when another parent says, with a mix of kindness and warning, “You know she’s got to pick one soon, right? The club kids are already year-round. If she waits, she’ll be behind.”
And just like that, the clock starts. She’s 11. Maybe 12. And somewhere in your mind, a little alarm goes off: the train is leaving, and your kid is standing on the platform holding a soccer ball and a swim bag, while other families have already made their choice.
Everyone in that parking lot seems to believe the same thing: pick one sport, commit fully, and do it early, or risk falling behind.
Here’s the problem. When researchers tried to find evidence that this belief pays off, they struggled to find any.
What the promise actually is
If you look closely, this advice makes one promise: that a kid who specializes early will get ahead — more skilled, more likely to make the team, and with a better chance to succeed. That’s what you’re told to expect from all those early morning drives.
So a group of researchers did the obvious thing. They asked the people who made it — athletes who reached the NCAA, the level all of this is supposedly aimed at — whether specializing early got them there (Rugg et al., 2021).
What they found doesn’t match what you hear in the parking lot. For athletes who made it to that level, early specialization wasn’t what set them apart. It didn’t give them an advantage. Instead, it was linked to more injuries—the early specializers had more of them.
Think about that for a moment. The kids who followed the advice you’re hearing didn’t show up with an advantage. They showed up with more physical strain.
Why “early and only” backfires
This isn’t surprising when you look at what’s really happening.
A body that does one sport, year-round, repeats the same movements ten thousand times. The same joints, same load, same muscles, same pattern, with no break to recover. That’s not a mysterious injury; that’s arithmetic. The kid who also swims, runs track, or plays a winter sport uses different muscles in different ways —which is another word for recovering while staying active. (Strosser, 2023, pp. 652-657)
Then there’s the part nobody prices in: the love. A sport a kid is pushed into, year-round, under the quiet pressure that this is The Thing now, stops feeling like hers. And the research on youth sport is blunt about where that road ends — the controlling, high-pressure version of a sport is precisely the version kids burn out of and walk away from (Álvarez et al., 2021). You can, with the best intentions on earth, train the love right out of a kid (Bean et al., 2014).
So, early specialization doesn’t reliably give kids an advantage. It does increase the risk of injury, and it slowly takes away the most important thing: your child’s love of playing.
“Behind” is the wrong axis
Here’s a different way to look at it, and this is the main idea.
The multi-sport kid isn’t behind. The idea of being behind only makes sense if everyone is on the same track and the one with the most practice by age 12 is ahead. But that’s not how it works. The kid playing three sports builds a broader athletic base — learning more movement patterns, improving coordination, and avoiding overuse injuries. By the time she’s 15 or 16, when it really matters, she’s healthy and still enjoys the game. (Carder et al., 2020, pp. 2850-2857)
That’s not falling behind. It’s actually a better approach, and it’s the path many successful athletes have taken. (McLellan et al., 2022)
The other child, the one who specialized at 11, sometimes succeeds. But often, it ends early, with a visit to the doctor or a teenager who is simply burned out.
So what do you actually do with this?
Recognizing that the belief is a myth is easy. The hard part is the honest, kid-specific look: is your kid specializing because she chose it and loves it — in which case, wonderful, go — or because the calendar backed you into it and nobody stopped to ask how she feels? Those two look identical from the bleachers, but they are very different. Real decisions happen when you understand the difference.
