She comes off the court still breathing hard. The match is decided, one way or the other, and she’s walking towards you with her bag on one shoulder and her face showing the expression it makes when she’s not in the mood to speak.
You know the question; it’s already coming to mind. What took place in that final set? Or the milder version— you okay? —which is, in fact, the same question being put forward more pleasantly.
You mean it as love. You watched the whole thing. You want in.
I’ve gotten this wrong myself. A couple of seasons ago, before my daughter had even buckled her seatbelt, I asked why the coach had pulled her in the third. I thought I was showing interest. She heard an audit.
Here’s what’s happening on her side of that walk to the car — and it changes everything about when you ask.
For the past hour or so, her body has been in a state it reserves for things that matter; her heart rate has increased, and her breathing has become rapid, the entire fight-or-flight mechanism put on full power. That’s not a flaw. That’s the system doing exactly what competition asks of it. The problem is that it doesn’t switch off when the whistle blows; instead, it slows gradually on its own timetable over minutes you can’t speed up (Weberruss et al., 2018).
And while it winds down, one specific part of her brain remains at a low level of activity: the prefrontal cortex. This is the area responsible for planning, the one that reasons, considers a point, and files it away for next time. When arousal is high, this part is the first to be throttled — the body decides there’s no time to think when there’s a game to get through, so it borrows the power the thinking brain would have used (Arnsten, 2009).
Which means the exact part of her that could use your feedback is the part that isn’t back online yet.
So when your question lands in that window, it doesn’t reach the analyst. It reaches the alarm system. She doesn’t file “work on the back-row transition.” She records a feeling: the second I walked off, I got reviewed. The tactical point disappears, and the feeling stays. You aimed at her thinking and hit her nervous system instead.
This is the hard part to sit with as a parent who’s only trying to help: your read on the game isn’t wrong. It might be completely accurate. The brain that could hear it isn’t in the car yet.
Immediately after the competition isn’t for analyzing; it’s for regulating, letting the system come down (Tamminen et al., 2017). The thinking part of the brain will come back on its own if you give it a little quiet, some space, a snack, and a question that isn’t meant as a test — it will then return more quickly when no one is continually triggering the alarm.
So you don’t skip the conversation. You move it.
You have to wait for the kid to come back. The real one — the one who can laugh about the weird call in the third and tell you what she actually saw out there. That kid usually shows up ten, twenty, sometimes ninety minutes later. And when she does, there’s a way to have the talk that works with her brain instead of against it: later, and in an order that lets her open the door first.
That order is Sunday’s tool. You’re not choosing between honesty and silence. You’re picking the moment she can actually hear you.
